I have come to bring fire

Jesus’ dramatic statements, “I have come to bring fire”, and “There is a baptism I must still receive”, refer to his imminent passion and death. His death on the Cross draws the line between Christ’s peace and the world’s peace. Christ’s peace, infused with divine truth and love, unites his disciples to himself and, in him, to each other. Jesus brings division between those who live in his peace and those who’ve made peace with the world.

Lord, grant me your peace, won for us in your passion.
