26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Amos 6:1, 4-7; Psalm 146; 1 Timothy 6:11-16; Luke 16:19-31

Social Justice

The main lesson we can learn from Jesus’ parable and Amos’ words is that the huge gap between the few who are extremely rich and the many who are destitute in our world is totally immoral. In fact, the rich man in Jesus' parable was not even aware of the suffering of Lazarus at his gate. Perhaps we are not rich and the money we do have has been earned by hard work. Nevertheless, we are asked to at least be aware that many of our sisters and brothers all over the world, like Lazarus, live in destitution. This awareness should make us deeply grateful for what we have and, whenever possible, willing to make sacrifices to help our sisters and brothers in our own and other countries.
