Nuturing ministry

In this beautiful gospel text we find an echo of Matthew’s first beatitude: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…’ Jesus seeks out the humble of heart, the poor, and the simple, those who know their need of God. These are the ones he calls to be his disciples. Do we screen too many out of ministry? For example, we pray for vocations to the ordained priesthood and religious life, and we talk about the ‘stages of sanctification’ at Synods in the Church but fail to nurture the potential for ministry in so many brothers and sisters of Christ. Jesus showed great faith in people and in their potential – let’s pray today for an increase of that grace within our church and faith communities.
