Forming Relationships

There is a striking contrast between the Pharisees and the little children in today’s Gospel. The Pharisees were able to get close to Jesus – but they used that freedom to try and catch him out. The children were initially kept away (as was the custom of the time) and Jesus reacted indignantly (and that in itself set him aside from most other adults of his time). The children were not there to test Jesus but to be touched by him. In telling us that we should become like little children, Jesus is telling us to come close to him, not to try and win debates against him.
