If only

If only it were possible to be perfect. The man of great wealth in today’s Gospel story comes to Jesus seeking affirmation of his life of virtue and an assurance that it will result in a promise of eternal life. He firmly believes that his life has been exemplary. But he does not receive from Jesus the affirmation and assurance that he was seeking. Instead, he encounters Jesus’ great love for him and his understanding and acceptance that being perfect is not possible even for a man of such virtue. ‘I put my trust in Yahweh. I will exult and rejoice in his love.’ Ps31/6.
