Life demands respect

Elijah prays to God, and God ends the terrible drought that has plagued Israel for almost three years. God brings life, but that life demands we treat others becomingly; and so, in the Gospel reading, Jesus teaches his listeners that life with God means more than doing what is required. We ought to go the extra mile. We must forgive from the heart and treat others with the dignity they deserve. By treating others with dignity we end the famine of hate and live the abundance of God’s kingdom.
