Sunday 9 December

Second Sunday of Advent

Baruch 5:1-9, Ps 126, Philippians 1:3-6. 8-11, Luke 3:1-6

Prepare a way for the Lord.

John the Baptist enters Advent like a bull into a china shop. He interrupts the jingle of Christmas shopping and endless syrupy Christmas songs. His raspy voice, booming from the desert cries, “Return to ‘Go!’” Begin again and “Prepare a way for the Lord.” Instead of Christmas chocolate and delicacies John the Baptist brings me locusts and wild honey. He wants me to get ready for Christ. He wants me to build a highway straight and true to allow Jesus into my heart. What boulders, what ravines form obstacles and must be removed from my life for the Lord to enter freely? When all this is done, then bring on the carols and Christmas celebrations.
