St Matthias, Apostle (F)

Acts 1:15-17, 20-26;
Psalm 113; John 15:9-17

Man of faith

Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. His calling as an apostle is unique in that he was not chosen personally by Jesus, who had already ascended into heaven. He was chosen before the Holy Spirit came down upon the early Church. St Matthias is the patron saint of alcoholics. I reflect on my response to my being chosen. “You did not choose me, no, I chose you; and I commissioned you to go out and bear fruit, fruit that will last.”
