Knowledge means responsibility

The Adam and Eve story in the book of Genesis has several layers of meaning. It is most commonly known as the story of the fall because, in choosing to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, Adam and Eve lost their ignorance but also lost their innocence. The result was that, having acquired knowledge, they were now fully responsible for their behaviours. That is a step we all take when we move into adulthood.
