Writing in the sand

There are times when intense emotions are aroused. We need some ‘time out’ to grapple with what we are experiencing and how best to respond. Jesus felt for this woman, publicly condemned and obviously shamed, and rather than react to her accusers, he doodles in the sand and chooses to respond only to her. He helps this condemned woman to appreciate that we are all sinners, and love for God is expressed in our wanting to sin no more, and refraining from conduct that is self-absorbed. As part of your quiet time for prayer today, pick up some stones, hold them as tightly as you can, and, remembering this woman from our gospel today, let the stones go.
