To have ears

John the Baptist, who is in prison (Matthew 11:2), sent messengers to Jesus to check him out. After they leave, Jesus affirms John’s role of proclaiming that Jesus is God’s anointed one. John prepares for a new era. Both Jesus and John proclaim the reign of God. Both suffer rejection. To ‘have ears’ is to go beyond the words and to discern the significance of what is unfolding. Pray to ‘have ears’ to discern Jesus, the anointed one, in your midst.
