Asking for What We Desire

Sometimes we’re told it’s better to suffer in silence than to make a fuss. But not always. Bartimaeus makes no secret of his distress at being blind – and he’s not about to miss the opportunity to let Jesus know of his situation. Jesus’ question sounds a bit odd – it’s obvious that Bartimaeus wants his sight back. But Jesus wants to know if Bartimaeus is asking out of faith – or is he simply looking for a cure? So, too, with us. If we want Jesus to do something for us, we need to ask him – not just bewail our situation or put up with it passively. How he responds will differ with each of us – that he will answer is without doubt.
