Power to show love

Placing the representative of the detested colonial power, the Romans, in a vulnerable, central role is extraordinary. A centurion has a Jewish servant who is gravely ill. Not only does the centurion like and care for the servant, he has been generous to the local community and has financed the building of a synagogue for them. Not only do we come to learn that the centurion has a compassionate and generous heart, but also that he is humble. In this heart-warming scene we more importantly come to see Jesus’ power and love in action.
