Room for God

Jesus is saying that to be poor is to be blessed. It is typical in Scripture for exaggeration to be used in order to communicate spiritual wisdom. The wisdom here is that with being poor there is more chance of being dependent upon God than if we are attached to wealth, since wealth runs the risk of causing people to display a high degree of self-reliance. The one thing that Jesus requires in his disciples is an emptiness that God can fill.
