Pope St Gregory the Great

1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Psalm 119 H; Luke 4:16-30

Relying on God’s power

Gregory is a good example of someone who relied on God’s power. He could have had a comfortable, easy life but he felt called to make a difference in the world. He founded monasteries and then became a monk himself. On becoming pope, he re-organised a lot of the Church’s wealth and distributed the surplus money to the poor. The Roman Empire was collapsing and there were many power struggles and battles happening. Gregory brought stability and spread the faith, including the sending of Augustine of Canterbury and his monks as missionaries to England in 596. God can achieve great things through us when we rely on his power.
