Sts Peter and Paul

Acts 12:1-11. Psalm 34, 2 Timothy 4:6-8,17-18, Matthew 16:13-19

The pillars of the Church

Peter and Paul were flawed characters who both denied Jesus. It was the effect of these denials that brought them to a state of emptiness. Suddenly it seemed they were filled with God. Or was it sudden? In Matthew, Jesus sees the future of the church in Peter. This clumsy, blundering fisherman. And what of Paul the tentmaker who was trying to destroy Christianity? He is the one who is blinded by the light of the risen Jesus. What does this say to us? I find it very comforting that Jesus calls flawed people.
