Trick Question

In today’s gospel, the Pharisees were sure they had Jesus cornered. The law of Moses cited God as the only sovereign to receive tribute. So was it lawful to pay taxes to the Romans?

Jesus cleverly used a coin to have the Pharisees answer their own question. In fact, his response goes much deeper than the question.

The various structures organised by societies lie on the surface of our lives. We acknowledge them but we don’t worship them. So what are the things of God that we do worship? In prayer, we go into the heart space and see that everything on our God list is connected with love.
