Repentance demands action

In our first reading, Daniel acknowledges that Israel has sinned by turning away from God and thereby betraying God’s covenant with Israel.

But it is easy to say “Sorry” even in a prayer to God! That is why, in our Gospel reading, Jesus makes it clear that actions speak louder than words.

If repentance is to have any real meaning it needs to be backed up with actions that show we really mean to return to and live by God’s way – actions that speak of compassion and judicious care in how we judge others if judgement cannot be avoided.
