God alone nourishes

Israel has been divided between Jeroboam and Rehoboam. The tribes under Jeroboam sink deeper and deeper into idolatry, forsaking God for golden calves.

Jesus’ miracle puts before us the question: Is it easier to say that God will nourish God’s people, or easier to feed a multitude from seven loaves? In feeding the multitude from seven loaves, Jesus reminds us that nothing is impossible to God, who alone is master of body and soul.

By his action, Jesus invites us to listen and stay true to the one God who alone nourishes both body and soul.
