Love and justice

Elijah finds God in the gentle breeze. God is found in the detail not just in the general scheme of things. Each person is sacred to God, not just people in general. In the gospel, Jesus makes it clear: we are judged by the way we treat others. In Jesus’ day a woman had few rights and was, therefore, open to exploitation. Divorce stigmatised her, made her vulnerable to abuse and exposed her to ridicule. Marriage gave her some legal protection. Recognition of each person’s dignity demands love and justice not just in general but in the detail.
