Blessed are the persecuted

Jesus speaks of the sufferings that his followers will have to endure. There have been numerous martyrs; even today those spreading Christ’s message are abused, suffer hardships, imprisonment and death. Because of our beliefs we may be abused and ridiculed. Jesus does not delude us that being christian will be easy. Indeed some passages in the gospel indicate it could be difficult as many have found. Jesus offers us encouragement such as in Matthew “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
