Ambition

We can imagine James and John going to their mother and asking her to talk to Jesus about promotion. None of them understood that this would result in spiritual restriction. Ambition belonged to the “me first” instinct that locked people into a prison of one. Jesus demonstrated that a love with no need except to give itself away, took people into a place of freedom. This concept seems to run against our primal instinct for survival but it is the way of true happiness.
