Rejoice!

We all know about the prodigal son. His is a good news story. But what of his brother who stayed home? He feels usurped by his brother’s return. “Feels” is the operative word, as his place was assured. What he cannot have understood was his father’s anguish in imagining he would never see his boy again. Had he done so, he would have celebrated rather than sulked when the prodigal returned.

Help me, God, to put myself aside so I can understand and help relieve other people’s suffering when they need me and rejoice with them when their situations improve.
