Late have I loved you!

Our innate sense of justice struggles with this gospel. We squirm thinking we might get less than our due. Perhaps deep inside we feel we deserve something from God? Maybe this gospel exposes our deep feeling that sin is more exciting. That to make a last minute conversion ensures the best of both worlds, that holiness is somehow boring, hard work and takes something from us. But as St Augustine says, “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you!” Today we can be grateful God chose us at any time.
