Empathy

Evelyn Greenslade, in ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, is a recent widow struggling to start life again on her own. She encounters the inflexible patter of call centres and gives up. Later, living in India, she is able to explain to call centre operatives, the value of empathy; the value of the reflective question; the value of shared silence. She does as Jesus told us to do. She encouraged workers to treat callers as human beings, with the dignity that comes from being a beloved child of God.
