Only things

I was fortunate enough to inherit some old and beautiful china and glass, and I looked after these things and was very fond of them. That was before the earthquake, when most of them were smashed to pieces. Curiously, my reaction, like that of many other people I have spoken to, was almost indifference, ‘well, they’re only things’. It seems to take a major calamity to make us realise how transitory and unimportant material possessions really are. ‘I’m alive, what can I do to help’, these are the important things and it took an earthquake to make me truly realise it.
