Pope Francis’s motto is from St Bede’s commentary on today’s Gospel reading. “Choosing through the eyes of mercy.” The pope’s merciful acts are legion. He peppered a letter on mercy with such comments as, “mercy is a wellspring of joy, serenity and peace … our salvation depends on it … God’s ultimate and supreme act in which he comes to meet us.” Let’s resolve to live daily our Lord’s word, “Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful.”
