Decision brings division

To be over your head in wild water is a standard Old Testament image for being overwhelmed by troubles and hostility. It is an ordeal. Jesus refers to his coming passion and death as such a ‘baptism’ or immersion. This ordeal will force people to take sides about Jesus. To accept him and follow him is to decide for one way and reject another. The disciples of Jesus were heading into hard times, persecution and division – even within families.
