A higher law

Jesus broke lots of the religious laws of his day. But the word ‘law’ in the Gospel reading today is a translation of the Hebrew ‘Torah.’ It means the whole of divine revelation made to Israel. So Jesus is saying he has come to complete the revelation. He is not saying you must wash your arms up to the elbows. Human beings seem to have a tendency, though, to sweat the small stuff - communion in the hand or on the tongue? And we ignore big stuff - care for the poor. It so much easier that way.
