Understanding love

Today’s feast commemorates the Last Supper. We remember and celebrate the events in the upper room where Jesus washes the feet of his disciples and institutes the Sacrament of Eucharist. Both are expressions of Jesus’ love. When he kneels at Peter’s feet with his basin of water and towels, Jesus is greeted with Peter’s protest, “Never! You will never wash my feet.” To which Jesus responds, “You do not understand what I am doing.” Peter has not understood that love is about receiving with grace and gratitude the gift that is offered. Can you let Jesus wash your feet?
