Use your brains!

“Well spoken, Master.” A scribe compliments Jesus for the response to his question about the greatest commandment. Jesus, in turn, commends and encourages him: “You are not far from the kingdom.” The scribes were considered experts in interpreting the law. However, they were guides, and being a guide never exempts a person from using his or her brain. Someone who doesn’t use God’s gift of intellect is not acting in a fully human way. Do I think for myself, or often rely lazily on someone else’s opinion? Do I just go with the crowd?
