‘He called … they left’

Mark is the master of understatement. ’Laconic’ hardly does justice to his reporting of Jesus’ call of his first disciples. Surely Simon and Andrew, James and John didn’t just get up and walk away from their families, their homes, their livelihoods? Most probably not. But whatever did happen, Mark certainly conveys the sense of unswerving conviction hidden in their decision to change their lives and follow Jesus. Do we share their conviction? Think about what you are attached to. What could you give up or walk away from for the sake of the Kingdom?
