He must increase; I must decrease

John the Baptist was a great man of God. Luke said of him ‘that no one born of a woman was greater than he’. Jesus himself was even his disciple for a while. Yet despite his exalted role in announcing the coming of God’s Kingdom, John never forgot that he was called to serve the one who was to come. Surrounded by crowds of enthusiastic followers he remained grounded, humble. How well do we resist the temptation to promote ourselves, to pretend to be more important than we are?
