Being truthful

Today’s parable, though spoken to the religious experts of Jesus’ time, might speak strongly to us too! Sometimes we make promises and do not keep them or give the appearance of compliance with no intention of complying. Jesus, as always, shines a light on what is false and even hypocritical. His words might prompt us to examine our own deep motives. How transparent and truthful are we in our relationships? Do we have the humility of the little remnant of Israel described by Zephaniah, who “do no wrong and tell no lies”?
