Doing, not saying

We all know the saying ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’. It’s the same with our faith in God – the proof is in the doing. Outward show and words will get us nowhere if we don’t “listen to these words and act on them”. Many claim the current woes of the world are ‘punishment from God’ for not obeying his laws, just as Jerusalem was desecrated in the first reading. Perhaps it is more like a parent who warns their child “if you play with fire, you will get burned” – it is not a ‘punishment’ from the parent when this happens, but sorrow that the child did not listen.
