Of mystery and love
Peter’s question to Jesus about John reveals an attitude many of us can relate to – a desire to be 'in the know' and in control of things. And it is from this that Jesus diverts him: “If I wish that he remains until I come, what is that to you?” In other words, John has his own mystery and his own solitude. If we take that last question seriously, we will admittedly never have the certainty and the knowledge about others we might like to have – but we shall have something far more important. We shall come to recognise and reverence God within every person – the God of mystery and of love.
