Divide and conquer
‘Divide and conquer’ is not always a positive approach – but it can at times be very useful. Paul uses it successfully to expose the fact that, while the Pharisees and Sadducees might have common ground in opposing him, they certainly are not united in their beliefs. Paul is the one who bears witness to Christ rather than to them – he has done so in Jerusalem, and is now called to do the same in Rome. The test of any witnessing – including our own – is whether it brings unity or division, because it is unity that reveals God’s love.
