19th Century historian and author, Charles A Beard, wrote: When it is dark enough, you can see the stars. That’s a great image to take into the season of Lent, and these ‘40 Days’ of identifying with the sacrifice of Jesus. Darkness envelops us as we recall the rejection, torture and death of Jesus. We respond with fasting, prayer and loving actions against this background of apparent defeat. We can feel the same heaviness today with Christianity losing its appeal or credibility.
