A seamless garment

When the Father speaks there is no gap between his Word and the divine action: He spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm (Ps 33:9). Remade in the image of God the faithful disciple’s baptismal garment is seamless (John 19:23-24). The disciple’s word follows action; action follows word. Yet the garment becomes torn: words fail, actions lie dormant. Therefore, the disciple prays daily to the Father: “create in me a clean heart, and an upright spirit” (Ps 51).
