St Monica

1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Ps 33; Matthew 25:14-30

Wisdom, virtue, holiness, freedom

The call of each of us to faith is due to the merciful goodness of God, not the works that anyone may do. We become part of the Mystical Body of Christ – “made members of Christ Jesus” – and have the capacity of doing something with the talents with which God has gifted us. Being a good and faithful servant, our talents grow with use. Otherwise they will wither with disuse. St Monica appreciated the natural talents of her son, Augustine, and was delighted with his conversion and practice of Christianity.
