Everything we have is pure gift

I hear the anguished cry of persecuted Christians around the world when I read this passage from Daniel. In New Zealand we easily take for granted our freedom from war, our religious freedom and the basic freedom of association and self-determination. How often do we ponder everything we have as pure gift? How willing are we to listen to the cry of the poor in our midst and around the world responding as generously as we have been treated ourselves? The Gospel challenges us to live justly, act tenderly and walk humbly with our God.
