Law and Love

The 3rd Commandment is about love – loving God by setting aside one day of the week for him. The Scribes and Pharisees had reduced it to a litany of petty rules and prohibitions. That’s what happens when love is taken out of law. Without love the law is an empty shell. Our guiding principle in any situation involving a moral choice should always be “What does love require me to do?”. As St Augustine famously said “Love, and do what thou wilt”.
