Twenty-two Ways

I was once in conversation with a Gaelic speaker who apropos of nothing told me that in Gaelic there are twenty-two ways to say “I love you.” In today’s Gospel the Lord Jesus tells us, in just about as many ways, that we are to love others. He tells us to be Godlike in our love for the neighbour. “Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate.” He leaves us in no doubt that love is the heart, the centre, the core, the mainspring of the Christian life.
