Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14, Psalm 51,
1 Timothy 1:12-17, Luke 15:1-32
Extravagant love
The three parables all emphasise God’s extravagant love. He told these parables to the scribes and Pharisees because they had complained Jesus welcomed sinners. In the parables the central characters already have a relationship with something or someone valuable. Then the relationship is broken and they all go to extreme ends to restore what has been lost.
So too with His listeners - their relationship with God has been broken or maybe changed from a heart to a head relationship. By telling these parables Jesus hopes they will realise God’s great love for them, that their heart relationship will be restored.
