St Bernard of Clairvaux - memorial

Judges 6:11-24, Ps.85, Matthew 19:23-30

How is Jesus calling you deeper?

St Bernard founded the Cistercian monastery at Clairvaux. Although often in poor health he spoke out against compromise in the church and the persecution of Jews. He wrote prolifically and his four degrees on spiritual growth are: ‘love of self for self, love of self for God, love of God for God and love of self only for God’s sake.’ St Bernard reminds us God keeps drawing us deeper. We cannot out-give God. Whether we feel inadequate like Gideon, or have ill health like Bernard, we are called to total commitment and eternal life. How is Jesus calling you deeper?
