Deuteronomy 4:32-40, Ps.77, Matthew 16:24-28

“He that seeks not the cross of Christ, seeks not the glory of Christ” (St. John of the Cross)

Oh how my ego squirms at: ‘renounce yourself’. Nothing in our self-actualising culture accepts the scandal of the cross. Yet persistently Jesus says there is no other way into glory. The cross is perversely cruel and we rightly abhor it. Jesus doesn’t call us to suffer gratuitously but to intentionally say ‘no’ to our ego, pride, power and greed, putting love at the centre of our choices. As Mary was present when Jesus was on the cross, she is with us. We ask Jesus and Mary to guide us deeper into loving.
