Slaving away

It is in our human nature to want the limelight, to be special in God’s eyes. To make that desire holy Jesus says that a disciple of his must become like a servant or slave. Perhaps I am prepared to serve but not become a slave. The first is perhaps my free choice; the second imposed on me by life’s circumstances and my quest for holiness. There is something slavish about mastering love in this quest. Is being a slave to the demands of love missing from my service?
