Apocalypse 22:1-7, Ps 95, Luke 21:34-36

Watch yourselves or your hearts will be coarsened.

To row a boat downstream can be so easy, but to struggle upstream is difficult. Even though we consider we are doing well against the current we will probably find ourselves steadily losing ground. Perhaps we think we are doing well in our Christian life because we are not like “those others,” but immersed in the current of the river of life we may be accepting the standards of the world and losing ground. Jesus tells us to “Stay awake.” The best way to do that, surely, is have Jesus give us strength to paddle upstream and look to him as our marker on the bank. Against him I measure my progress.
