Ps.17, Job 1:6-22, Luke 9:46-50

Suffering and loss

How easy it is to praise and thank God when life is good. But what about when things turn sour? “How could you let this happen, Lord?” is our likely response. But Job saw things more clearly.

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

Naked I shall return again.

Yahweh gave, Yahweh has taken back.

Blessed be the name of Yahweh!”

And St Theresa of Lisieux, whose feast day it is today, exemplified a child-like trust in a loving God, in all circumstances. May we follow their example.
