In pursuit of happiness

We may think of eternal life as a life of happiness.

We often strive to capture this happiness, here on earth.

But this can be a selfish endeavour.

Maybe even the pursuit of a false idol … ‘happiness’.

I think John Ralston Saul expresses Jesus’ intent when he says,

“...happiness refers to the public good;

it does not mean that you can go away and look after yourself and make yourself happy.”

Sometimes when we put the common good before our own desires,

we discover that happiness is an unexpected side-effect.
